Thermal Properties

The engine and its environment in a jet
engine are exposed to high temperatures of the
order of 1500 ºC and above and hence subjected to
high thermal stresses. The engine parts have to
withstand this high temperature and also perform
the desired function for a reasonable lifespan.
Presently the components like turbine blades,
vanes, nozzle, and combustion chambers are made
of Nickel based Super-alloys or directionally
solidified single crystals capable of withstanding
the harsh environment. Thermal barrier coatings are
also being extensively used to enhance the
performance and life of the components.
