Synthetic photoresponsive systems : fluorescence and photoisomerisation studies of indolic ethenyl and dienyl chromophores and development of bacteriorhodo

The thesis titled " Synthetic photoresponsive systems - Fluorescence and photoisomerisation studies of indolic ethenyl and dienyl chromophores and development of bacteriorhodopsin analogues" deals with synthesis, fluorescence, photoisomerisation and fluorescence probe properties of a few hitherto unknown ethenyl and dienyl indolic compounds. It further examines the ability of some of the indolic dienal chromophores to bind to bacterioopsin (bOP) - the apoprotein of bacteriorhodopsin (bR). These studies have been undertaken with the objectives of: (i) mapping the singlet excited state potential energy surface in terms of structure and polarity of the excited state of photoactive linear polyenes, and (ii) to develop new bR analogues having UV-vis absorption and photoactivity different from the native bR.
