Synthesis of prostaglandin like compounds.

Prostaglandins (PGS) are unsaturated, polyhydroxylated, cyclic 20-carbon fatty acids associated with most of the tissues, fluids and organs of mammals. They have been found to be perhaps the most physiologically active substances known so far. Although their precise physiological roles have not yet been clearly defined, their potency and "activity in many apparently unrelated biological systems have interested scientists of various disciplines. The varying actions of different members of the PG family are reminiscent of the steroids, which have many functions, often widely different.. The interest in the PGS has received tremendous impact in the last fifteen years during which more than 3000 papers have been published. The interest is growing still and it now appears that approximately H- publications per day appear on some aspects of prostaglandins. More Info
