Synthesis, Dielectric and Ferroelectric Behavior of Strontium Barium Niobate

Strontium Barium Niobate, with the general formula SrxBa1-xNb2O6 (SBN) and having a tetragonal tungsten bronze structure, is considered a promising lead free ferroelectric. When compared to other perovskites such as PMN and BT, in which only one specific composition gives rise to the ferroelectric phase, SBN exhibits ferroelectricity in the composition range 0.20 ≤ x ≤ 0.80. However, a serious problem encountered in SBN is the occurrence of abnormal grain growth (AGG) and associated duplex microstructure. AGG leads to formation of micro-cracks within the material thus severely affecting mechanical, electrical, dielectric and ferroelectric properties. The challenge therefore is to eliminate/suppress AGG and obtain superior properties. The present research on SBN is thus aimed at (a) exploration of possible causes for abnormal grain growth (b) development of synthesis methods to minimize abnormal grain growth and (c) correlation of microstructure with ferroelectric and dielectric properties.
