Synthesis and mixed valence aspects of diruthenium complexes incorporating neutral and anionic bridging functionalities.

The development of newer classes of polynuclear ruthenium-polypyridine complexes incorporating suitable bridging functionalities are of considerable current research interest. This is primarily due to their potential use in diverse areas such as photosensitisers for photochemical conversion of solar energy, molecular electronic devices and as photoactive DNA cleavage agents for therapeutic purposes. In this context we have designed new classes of diruthenium-bis(bipyridine) complexes incorporating neutral as well as anionic (symmetric and asymmetric) bridging functionalities and have scrutinised their spectroelectrochemical and structure-reactivity correlationship aspects.
