Synthesis and Characterization of Organochalcogen Compounds: Synthetic Models of Glutathione Peroxidase

Chapter I outlines a brief literature survey and recent developments in the area of organochalcogen chemistry. Chapter II describes the synthesis and characterization of a series of low-valent organoselenium/ sulfur compounds derived from 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline. Selenenyl halides having 2-phenyl-2-oxazoline ligand have been successfully synthesized. The existence of intramolecular Se?N interactions in all the derivatives was examined by 1H, 77Se NMR and X-ray crystallography. Chapter III describes the ortho-lithiation and selenenation reaction of novel 2-phenyl-2-oxazine. The reaction of 2-phenyl-2-oxazine with n-BuLi and selenium powder led to the formation of the novel triselenide stabilized by SeN nonbonding interaction. This observation has been extended to study the selenation reaction in detail by electrospray mass spectrometry. The triselenide shows better glutathione peroxidase like activity than the diselenide analogue. More Info
