Sulphur partition between liquid steel and CaO-based slags used in secondary steelmaking.

A desulphurisation step, downstream of the primary steelmaking furnace, has become common practice for achieving sulphur levels below 0.01%. The slags formed after these treatments are of complex CaO-MgO-Al2O3-CaF2-SiO2 type. Only a few results are available for the sulphide capacity of such slags under the conditions of low oxygen potential. Therefore, the present investigation was aimed at : Study of slag-metal equilibrium for the determination of sulphide capacity, Cs, of selected slags, in the CaO-MgO-A12O3, CaO-MgO-A12O3-SiO2, CaO-MgO- A12O3-CaF2 and CaO-MgO-A12O3-CaF2-SiO2 systems, of composition similar to those normally encountered during steel desulphurisation in secondary refining processes. Study of synthetic slag desulphurisation in laboratory, as well as) industrial-sized ladles, in air tmosphere and under vacuum, and compare the results with those of equilibrium experiments.
