Study on agile manufacturing systems

Agility as the term used herein is the ability of an organization to respond quickly and successfully to change. Agility is not only the outcome of technological achievement, advanced organizational and managerial structure and practice, but also a product of human abilities, skills and motivations. To achieve the status of an agile manufacturer, the concerned organizations need to clearly understand the concept of agility relative to their industrial and business circumstances and then acquire the appropriate characteristics, after proper justification. This study was initiated with the basic objectives of understanding what enables agility in manufacturing systems, develop a modeling framework for assessing agility, evaluating agility in Indian manufacturing industries using different approaches and identifying different policies for enhancing agility using suitable optimization models.
