Some studies on the behaviour of structural concrete under thermal loading.

A structure immediately after its construction has to bear the scorching rays of the sun that raise the temperature of the exposed surface to a maximum value during the daytime, and at late night the surface temperature drops down to minimum value. Such a temperature variation during a period of 24 hours comprises one thermal cycle. Such thermal cycles acting continuously on a structure throughout its lifetime have an adverse bearing on its durability , which naturally calls for the reduction in the designed if of the structure. The durability of a concrete structure is affected by a number of influential parameters and though uncertainty exists regarding the contribution of each factor individually, yet the contribution of a large number of thermal cycles over years cannot be denied.
