PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT OF ASSEMBLY OF FRAMES BY LAYOUT REDESIGN CONSIDERATIONS

present competitive scenario productivity improvement of each resource plays a significant
role for achieving cost effectiveness for an industry. Being a powerful tool, it is crucial to the
welfare of the industrial firm as well as the economic progress. The present paper gives emphasis
on productivity improvement by layout redesign of assembly & packing section of a firm. The
study is carried out in a modular office furniture manufacturing company.

There are two assembly & packing section as V1V2 & C7-C5. The company produces frames of various sizes of aluminum & CRCA metal. The tools used for redesigning layout and to minimize the unnecessary movement are flow diagram, flow process chart, activity relationship chart. In the
existing layout the space was not utilized fully and place for each operation like storing,
packaging of the material was not defined.

 

After improving design of layout the time required for assembling & packaging for five frames reduced from 14.25 min. to 6.33 minutes & distance traveled reduced from 20 meters to 7 meters for V1V2 assembly & in C7-C5 assembly section time required for assembling & packaging for eight frames reduced from 14.33 min. to 9 minutes & distance traveled reduced from 18 meters to 7 meters. Due to significant changes made in the previous layout of both the assemblies productivity increases as 54 frames per hour & 47 frames per hour
