Predication and Optimizations

Corrosion is the deterioration of
essential mechanical properties in a material due
to reaction with the elements in the environment.
The aggressive chemicals handled in process
industries like paper, fertilizer and nuclear
industries magnify the problem of corrosion to a
larger extent. Inorder to overcome this difficulty
the corrosion resistant materials like stainless
steels were developed. Processing of stainless
steel is difficult due to the increased the strength
because of high alloy content. To solve these
problems the corrosion resistance to the surface
is imparted by depositing a thick layer of
corrosion resistant material by means of
cladding. Cladding offers a cost effective solution
to that problem. The various processes were
developed for cladding are centriccast, roll
bonding and weld cladding etc.,
The centric cast and co-extrusion is
used only incase of pipes and the roll bonding is
used for the flat plates and metal sheet but the
weld cladding is used for complex shape such as
pump casing. In the weld cladding the dilution is
one of the responses that needed to be controlled
by means of varying the process parameters like
wire feed rate, welding speed, nozzle to plate
distance, weld gun angle and gas flow rate. The
data has been collected from the carefully
designed set of experiments based on central
composite rotatable design. The percentage
dilution was measured from the weld beads and
a statistically validated mathematical model was
developed to predict the percentage dilution.
