Optimization of Surface Roughness

This paper is concerned with
optimization of the surface roughness when
milling Steel (En24) with carbide coated inserts.
Optimization of milling is very useful to reduce
cost and time for machining. The approach is
based on Response Surface Method (RSM). In
this work, the objectives are to find the
optimized parameters, and to find out the most
dominant variables (cutting diameter, federate,
Spindle speed, depth of cut and with of cut). The
second-order mathematical models, in terms of
the machining parameters, have been developed
for each of these five roughness parameters
prediction using response surface method on the
basis of experimental results. The roughness
models as well as the significance of the
machining parameters have been validated with
analysis of variance. It is found that the
response surface models for different roughness
parameters are specific to work piece materials.
An attempt has also been made to obtain
optimum cutting conditions with respect to each
of the five roughness parameters considered in
the present study with the help of response
optimization technique.
The direct and interaction effect of the
machining parameter with tool wear were
analyzed, which helped to select process
parameter in order to produces better surface
finish and to find optimized parameter.
