employees, clients and other stakeholders by managing the hazards and improving the
beneficial effects of their activities, products and services.

Increasingly, stringent legislation, the development of economic policies, human resources management and other measures are used to foster Occupational Health and Safety protection and welfare. A general growth of concern from stakeholders and other interested parties suggests a clear commitment to Occupational health and Safety is required.


OHSAS 18000 is an international occupational health and safety management system
specification, was created via a concerted effort from a number of the worlds leading
national standards bodies, certification bodies, and specialist consultancies. It comprises
two parts, 18001 and 18002 and embraces BS8800 and a number of other publications.
OHSAS 18001 gives the requirements related to health and safety management systems.


It is an assessment specification for Occupational Health and Safety Management
Systems. It was developed in response to the need for companies to meet their health and
safety obligations in an efficient manner. To compliment OHSAS 18001, BSI published
OHSAS 18002, which explains the requirements of the specification and shows you how
to work toward implementation and registration.

Together, this integrated package will provide business with the practical means of registration, It enables an organization to have control over, and knowledge of, all relevant hazards resulting from normal operations and abnormal situations, and improve its performance


This communication discuss about the approach and requirements of OHSAS:18001 and
explains how OHSAS integrates the activities of an organization with the arrangements
needed for safety. This communication also focuses on how OHSAS can be established
in an mining industry.
