IMPROVING PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH SAFE PRACTICES FOR PRODUCTIVITY IMPROVEMENT

Unsafe acts and conditions pose threat to safety of lives and create
conditions dull and detrimental to production and productivity. Besides
causing grieve and distress to the persons involved, an unsafe incident
often results in damage and loss of equipments, stoppages of work,
deployment of resources for restoring the normal situation and loss of
workforce motivation. All these finally tell upon production and
productivity of the industry. Safety and productivity are not mutually
exclusive rather they go hand in hand.

In today’s economic scenario when cost competition is
fierce and every iota of effort is being made to cut costs, looking safety as a
measure to improve productivity becomes much more significant. This
project enumerates use of a systematic approach to improve safety and
productivity of an underground coal mine. The coal mine under
consideration is relatively an old mine where coal extraction is partly
conventional and partly mechanized. Safety in an underground coal mine
becomes a much more complex issue with presence of unique Geo-Mining
features like, depth, gradient, strata condition, water seepage, air supply,
space constraint, etc. and it remains a major concern. This project also
illustrates a focused approach to reduce unsafe acts and conditions in an
underground mine.
