“IMPLEMENTATION OF VLSI ARCHITECTURE FOR THE H.264/AVC VIDEO CODEC”

 Moderndatacompressiontechniquesofferthepossibilitytostoreortransmitthevast amountofdata  necessarytorepresentdigitalimagesandvideoinanefficientand robustway.This hasleadtothewidespreadadoptionofdigitalvideoinavastarrayof applicationsrangingfromvideotelephonyandvideoconferencingtoDVDanddigital TV.  The  need  to  exchange  compressed  video  data  across  different  services  and applicationshasleadtotheemergenceofvideocodingstandards.These  standards providethemeansneededtoachieveinteroperabilitybetweensystemsdesignedby differentmanufacturers foranygivenapplication.

H.264/AVCisthenewestvideocodingstandardoftheITU-TVideoCodingExperts Group  and  the  ISO/IEC  Moving  Picture  Experts  Group.  The  main  goals  ofthe H.264/AVCstandardizationefforthavebeenenhancedcompressionperformanceand provisionofa“network-friendly”video  representationaddressing“conversational” (video  telephony)  and   “non-conversational”  (storage,   broadcast,  or  streaming) applications.  H.264/AVC  has  also  achieved  a  significant  improvement   in  rate- distortionefficiencyrelativetoexistingstandards.

 

In this project,theimplementationoftheVLSIarchitecturesfortheCAVLCencoder and    theCAVLCDecoderhasbeendiscussedindetail.         .
