The project entitled ‘Steganography using DWT and Huffman Coding’ is a matlab based programming to implement image Steganography. The art and science of writing hidden messages in such a way that no one, apart from the sender and intended recipient, suspects the existence of the message, a form of security through obscurity is obtained through the process termed as Steganography. This project presents a novel technique for Image Steganography based on DWT and Huffman coding. DWT is used to transform original image (cover image) from spatial domain to frequency domain. Firstly, two dimensional Discrete Wavelet Transform (single level 2-D Haar DWT) is performed on a gray level cover image and Huffman encoding is performed on the secret image before embedding. Then the secret image is grouped into 3 bit blocks and these blocks are used to replace the last 3 bits of the selected sub band of the DWT transformed image. Then IDWT is performed in order to obtain the stego-image. The stego image is transmitted to another user. The stego-image is extracted at the receiving end by performing DWT and decoding the bits using Huffman tree. Satisfactory security is maintained since the secret message/image cannot be extracted without knowing decoding rules and Huffman table.
