ABSTRACT

 

 Diabetic Retinopathy is one of the major causes for blindness from premature new born baby to aged people group. In a country like India where expert physicians are few and patients are more, analyzing the image through limited human ability is time consuming and concentrated to only big cities. Thus through this project we are trying to align Engineering concepts in Medical field using Image Processing Techniques.

In any Diabetic Retinopathy Diagnosis program, the total time taken is 10 minutes for Dilation and approximately 10 minutes for diagnosis by a human expert.

In this work, we are focusing on optimizing the diagnosis period which may be of utmost useful during camp programs on Diabetic Retinopathy (DR) and/or Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) screening such as that done by Narayana Nethralaya Postgraduate Institute of Ophthalmology, Bangalore, India through KIDROP program and also during day to day routine work of an Ophthalmologist.

 

To do so, we are trying to develop a system (using DSP) which can be integrated with the existing Fundus imaging tool for the automated diagnosis of diabetic retinopathy. Automatic screening will help the doctors to quickly identify the condition of the patient in a more accurate way.

 

The macular abnormalities caused due to diabetic retinopathy can be detected by applying morphological operations, filters and thresholds on the fundus images of the patient.
