Applications written in C and other languages that can be compiled to ARM native code and run, but this development path isn’t officially supported by Google. Android is available as open source. Google threw open the entire source code (including network and telephony stacks) that were not available previously, under by an Apache license. Certain parts that relate to a specific hardware can’t be made open and are not considered part of the Android platform.With Apache License, vendors are freeto add proprietary extensions without submitting those back to the open source community. While Google’s contributions to this platform are expected to remain open¬ sourced, the branchescould explode using varieties of licenses. HISTORY 1) Acquisition by Google In July 2005,google acquired Android, Inc., a small startup company based in Palo Alto, California, USA. Android’s co founders who went to work at Google included Andy Rubin, Rich Miner, Nick Sears and Chris White. At the time, little was known about the functions of Android, Inc. other than that they made software for mobile phones This began rumors that Google was planning to enter the mobile phone market. At Google, the teamled by Rubin developed a mobile device platform powered by the Linux kernel which they marketed to handset makers and carriers on the premise of providing a flexible, upgradeable system. It was reported that Google had already lined up a series of hardware component and software partners and signaled to carriers that it was open to various degrees of cooperation on The most recently released versions of Android are:  2.0/2.1 (Eclair), which revamped the user interface and introduced HTML5, W3C Geolocation PI and Exchange ActiveSync 2.5 support[43]  2.2 (Froyo), which introduced speed that improvements with JIT optimization and the Chrome V8 JavaScript engine, and added Wi-Fi hotspot tethering and Adobe Flash support  2.3 (Gingerbread), which refined the user interface, improved the soft keyboard and copy/paste features, and added support for Near Field Communication  3.0/3.1 (Honeycomb) A tablet-oriented release which supports larger screen devices and introduces many new user interface features, and supports multicore processors and hardware acceleration for graphics. SECURITY: Android is a multi-process system, in which each application (and parts of the system) runs in its own process. Most security between applications and the system is enforced at the process level through standard Linux facilities, such as user and group IDs that are assigned to applications. Additional finer-grained security features are provided through a "permission" mechanism that enforces restrictions on the specific operations that a particular process can perform, and per-URI permissions for granting ad-hoc access to specific pieces of data. More speculation followed reporting that as Google was definingtechnical specifications, it was showing prototypes to cell phone manufacturers and network operators.
